The benefits of business insurance with DHL eCommerce
Sending a parcel or pallet with insurance means you add extra security to your shipment. If your shipment is lost or damaged, you will receive compensation based on the insured value. Without insurance, only the statutory liability applies. This compensation is based on weight and is usually lower than the actual value of the shipment.
What you get with an insurance:
- You receive the replacement value of the contents of the parcel or pallet
- Reimbursement of transport costs
- No deductible
- Fast and clear claims handling
- One invoice for both transport and insurance
- The recipient always signs for receipt of the shipment
When send an insured parcel or pallet?
Taking out insurance for your business shipments is advisable when:
- The value of your parcel or pallet is higher than the standard compensation*
- The parcel is light but has a high value
- You regularly ship valuable goods
* The maximum compensation is €3.40 per kg for transport within the Netherlands (in accordance with Book 8 of the Dutch Civil Code, Article 1105 and the related decree) and 8.33 SDR per kg for cross-border transport (approximately €10 per kg, in accordance with the CMR Convention).
The conditions
- The packaging of your shipments must be suitable for DHL’s transport and sorting process.
- The insurance applies per shipment.
- If you drop off the parcel at a DHL ServicePoint, a counter employee must accept and scan the parcel. DHL Lockers and Self-service scanners cannot be used.
- If the value of your shipment exceeds €100,000, please discuss this in advance with our customer service.
How do you take out insurance?
Would you like to insure your parcel easily? You can arrange this for both parcels and pallets while creating your shipment in My DHL Portal or in your own shipping tool. Here’s how it works:
- Create a shipment in My DHL Portal or in your own shipping tool
- Enter all shipping details
- Under 'Extra services', choose 'Insurance'
- Select the desired insured value
After completing the shipment, it is insured immediately.
Insured value per shipment
In My DHL Portal, you choose the insured value yourself:

| From €500 up to €1,000 | Fixed value category |
| From €1,000 | You enter the amount yourself |
| From €100,000 | Only possible after consultation with DHL eCommerce |
No VAT is charged on the insurance premium.
Do you regularly ship valuable parcels?
Do you regularly ship valuable products? Then it may be attractive to insure all your pallets or parcels. This way, you benefit from a competitive premium for an entire year and avoid having to take out insurance for each individual shipment. For this, please contact our customer service or your regular DHL eCommerce contact person.
What you can't insure:
- Envelopes
- Letterbox parcels
- Intellectual value
- Consequential damage
- Return shipments
Our claims handling
Have you taken out insurance with us and noticed damage to or loss of your shipment? Please report this immediately to the driver or our customer service. You will receive a case number, which you can use to submit a claim to DHL eCommerce – no later than thirty days after the shipment date.
